Or the chick with the orange hair from The 5th Element who is willing to let our world be destroyed because of how eager we seem to war with each other. It seems like all those aliens seem to focus on, is our destructive natures.
And then you watch something like this.
It is narrated by Tom Hanks and it tells the story of 9/11 from the side of the boating community in and around Manhattan. When the first building collapsed, they shut down all traffic in and out of the city - the bridges and the tunnels. And Manhattan, being truly and island, left the people stuck there without too many options. Many of them, scared and unsure of what was happening, flocked to the shores in a desperate attempt to get away.
The local ferries could only hold so many people, so a general call from the coast guard went out. And the response? It was overwhelming. Fishing boats, tug boats, private boats all descended on the island. And the people? From high powered execs to coffee shop waitresses, they were all one that day. Helping each other, encouraging each other and surviving a horrible day together. It all lead to the largest sea evacuation ever. Even larger than the evacuation at Dunkirk in WWII, where over 339,000 British and French soldiers were evacuated over 9 days.
On 9/11 almost 500,000 civilians were rescued from Manhattan by boat in just under 9 hours.
I dare you to watch this video and not cry. I dare you to not witness the power of the human spirit to love, to care, and to come together to save lives and not be moved. We are a petty and spiteful race of people, but it's so well balanced with our capacity for compassion, caring and love.
"I believe every body has a little hero in 'em. You just gotta look in, and it's in there. It'll come out if it needs to be."
Seriously.. Thoughts?
